This workshop discusses the changes in software developer careers brought forward by open source. In the emerging open source ecosystem, open source developers, while being employed by their software firms, can gain additional independence and can increase their economic value to employers. There is economic value in being a committer to a high-profile project, as a recent survey showed. This workshop discusses how an economically rational software developer will act to maximize economic gain, that is, salary and long-term employability.
